The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has called on Nigerians to reject the plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to establish state police.
The party’s National Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the call in a statement on Thursday, saying the APC-led government lacks the moral authority and the trust of Nigerians to undertake a major shift in the country’s policing structure.
Dr. Baba-Ahmed accused the Federal Government of failing to effectively manage the nation’s security architecture and institutions.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu is seeking to establish state police through a constitutional amendment at a time when, according to him, the administration’s credibility and competence are at an unprecedented low in the nation’s democratic history.
“Going by precedent and record, this administration will almost certainly secure what is needed to amend the Constitution and actualise its desire to establish state police.
“Its plan to engineer the emergence of state police is suspicious and should be rejected,” he said.
The PRP National Chairman stated that the 2027 general election should be credible and transparent before the nation decides on important issues such as state policing structures.
The party further advised the APC administration to make greater efforts toward securing citizens and bringing an end to the insecurity confronting the country.
According to the PRP, while Nigeria needs a major review and overhaul of its security, law and order systems, it also needs institutions that will address national security challenges and create an environment that inspires citizens’ confidence and faith in their leaders and critical institutions.
