The All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, seeking the intervention of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) over what it described as the unlawful claim by Mr Abayomi Hunye that he is the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Ogun State.
In a petition signed by the APC Director of Administration, Ayoola Peter Olajolo Esq., the party alleged that Hunye has been parading himself in the media and on social media platforms as the APC governorship candidate despite not being recognised by the party.
The APC described the claim as false, fraudulent and a deliberate act of impersonation capable of misleading the public and threatening peace in Ogun State.
According to the petition, Hunye was suspended from the party on April 7, 2026, following a petition from his ward, Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area.
The party said the suspension was subsequently ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and communicated to the APC National Headquarters.
According to the petition, Hunye was suspended over alleged anti-party activities, nefarious dealings considered injurious to the image of the party, and actions aimed at creating disaffection among loyal members.
The APC maintained that it had already conducted a valid governorship primary election and that the only recognised governorship ticket of the party in Ogun State consists of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as governorship candidate and Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as deputy governorship candidate.
The party said documentary evidence, including Hunye’s suspension letter, the ratification of the suspension by the Ogun State Working Committee, and related communications to the party’s national leadership, were attached to the petition.
The APC urged the police to invite Hunye for questioning over what it described as possible violations of Nigerian laws and to investigate his actions.
The party further requested that, upon conclusion of investigations, Hunye should be prosecuted for alleged impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and violations of the Electoral Act 2026.
It also asked the police to restrain him from further presenting himself as an APC candidate to avert what it called a potential breakdown of law and order in Ogun State.
The APC pledged its full cooperation with security agencies during the investigation and expressed readiness to provide witnesses and additional information required by the police.
The petition is the latest development in the ongoing controversy surrounding the Ogun State governorship race ahead of the January 2027 election.
